Food Composting
Published: December 15, 2010
Raw fruits and vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds, and coffee filters can all be composted. Oils, meats, dairy, and cooked food should not be composted - these attract pests and can turn rancid. Food waste and cooking oil can be dropped off at the West Lafayette Street Department to be composted and help power the West Lafayette Wastewater Treatment Plant. For more information on the biodigester, see www.westlafayette.in.gov/topic/index.php?topicid=264&structureid=180
Food waste can be composted at home using a worm bin, a tumbling composter, a three bin system, or by simply burying food scraps 10 inches in your yard or garden bed.
